A Brief History of Williston

Williston, Vermont, was established in 1763 under the New Hampshire Grants, an initiative by Governor Benning Wentworth of the colony of New Hampshire. The town was named in honor of Samuel Willis, a notable New York merchant and one of the original grantees of the land. Interestingly, Willis never visited the town that bore his name.

Throughout the 19th century, Williston developed a distinctive architectural identity that it maintains to this day. The town is home to a well-preserved collection of brick civic and religious buildings in its historic center, including the Old Brick Church of 1832, widely regarded as one of Vermont’s finest examples of country Gothic architecture. The former Universalist Church, now serving as Town Hall, dates to 1860, and the stately Federated Church of 1867 was designed by noted Boston architect John Stevens.

Williston also holds a significant place in Vermont’s political history. Thomas Chittenden, the first governor of Vermont and president of the Vermont Republic, made his home in Williston and is buried in the town’s central cemetery, where a prominent memorial stands in his honor. Several original Chittenden family homes remain standing as quiet testaments to the town’s founding era.

In more recent decades, Williston has grown into one of Vermont’s most dynamic communities. The western side of town, bordering South Burlington, has become the state’s largest commercial hub, drawing shoppers and businesses from across the region. This blend of deep historical roots and modern convenience makes Williston a uniquely appealing place to live, work, and raise a family.
